![]() ![]() With the themes she tackles throughout the book, of immigration, of even sexism and colorism, she brings so many relatable concepts to the fore. So, when I read Jhumpa Lahiri’s memoir, In Other Words, in which she shares her journey of learning Italian, it was as if she was echoing my deepest, darkest fears. I blindly followed it and here I am, with fresh dreams, a fresh perspective on life, and a whole new motivation in hand. ![]() When I was in a bad spot, it held my hand and guided me. For example, the language that I’ve been learning saved me over the past few months. And sometimes, we have strong reasons for doing them. We just do them for the heck of it, to experience something new, to dive into a world that’s an escape from our present realities. Sometimes, we have no reason for doing some things. ![]() But trust me, I’m not the only one feeling these things. It might seem like I’m glorifying the concept of different languages for no reason, as if I’m trying to find reason in what has had me in a chokehold over the past few months. But once you start on this journey, there’s so much knowledge, so much beauty waiting for you. Of course, you don’t HAVE to learn a new language to know this. ![]() The more you learn, the more you realize how vast the differences are between people and how similar we all are. ![]()
